A native hedge for the birds
Deci and I were delighted to attend Seán Ronayne's talk in the Black Box in Belfast earlier this year. Not just because we got to enjoy electricity and heat while our house was without power (thanks, Eowyn), but because it was so inspiring.
Seán is an Irish ornithologist with a passion for birds that’s totally infectious. He’s on a mission to capture the sounds of every bird species in Ireland, a project that combines meticulous science with the simple joy of being immersed in nature. His work isn’t about flashy headlines or quick fixes - it’s about making a lasting difference by listening closely to the world around us.
That evening, as he spoke about habitat loss, the importance of bird calls, he inspired us to do something about it. So, we planted a hedge. A native hedge, full of food, shelter, and all the things that birds need to thrive.
It might seem small (and it is literally small - basically a few twigs poking out of the ground right now), but it felt like an important step - a way to take Seán’s words and put them into action. You don't need to own an estate to make a difference. Our little corner of Belfast will be more hospitable to birds in the coming years.
We can’t recommend following Seán enough. His dedication to preserving Ireland’s birdlife and creating habitats for wildlife is something we all can learn from. Whether you're a lifelong bird lover or just starting to pay attention, there’s so much to gain from what he’s doing. So go find him online, listen to his recordings, and get inspired.
And if you’re feeling motivated, maybe plant a hedge of your own. The birds will thank you for it.
